Detailed description of Dormie Club Golf Course
Dormie Club is a Semi-Private 18-hole golf course located in west End / Pinehurst, North Carolina.
The Dormie Club Golf Course opened in 2010. The course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.
At Dormie, Crenshaw and Coore have designed a walking golf course just 4.5 miles north of the Village of Pinehurst on more than 300 rolling acres of land with 100-foot elevation changes, two natural lakes, and hardwood and pine forests, with no housing or roadways ever within this rather large golf course property. The designe of the Dormie Club is a throwback to the Golden Age of Golf Design philosophy of wide corridors and multiple angles to the green."
After acquiring 1,000 acres in December 2007, out of which the Dormie golf course and areas for residential subdivision were carved, the developers of Dormie decided to proceed with building and completing construction of the golf course despite the recession. The original goal of the Dormie Club was to offer an invitation-only, private membership; however, upon completion of the golf course in mid-2010, Dormie decided to take non-member play as well as member play thru December 2012, after which the Club will revert back to a fully private Club.
The par 71 course can play 6,984 yards, but has only 68 acres of managed grass. The balance of the site is maintained in natural sand “floorsâ€, wire grasses, pine trees and vegetation native to the Sandhills region

Mixed feelings about this course. If you are a fan of Coore Crenshaw you will love it. Course was built as part of an ultra upscale private community to rival Forest Creek (rumored $150K initiation fee). Economy went south and now course is in austere mode. Course is much too difficult for average golfer with numerous forced carries of 180-200 yards from tees and a 459 yard par 4 that seems to never end. Scratch and low handicap golfers will love it, but for average players playing it for the first time it will kick you in the teeth. Difficult greens to put as well as chip/pitch to. I can't imagine anyone other than retired scratch golfers or retired tour pros wanting to play this every day. Having said the above the course is beautiful and immaculately maintained.

Excellent layout, great conditions. Greens were rolling 9-10. Play the forward tees if you don't hit the long ball. It provides a true test from the back tees. The designers left much of the area as the found it. If you are planning a Golf trip to the Sandhills, this should be one of the courses on your list (also Mid-South). A little more expensive than many of the course but this is a coures you will remember and return to. Fortunately the course does not seem to get a ton of play, which gets you access and reduces waiting on other groups.
